Why fight for your marriage if it is a gift from God,it should be easy right?.
Even though marriage is physical,it should be noted the foundation of a godly marriage is a covenant sealed in the blood of Jesus Christ who died for us.It is a bond of a lifetime,and that is why in Matthew 19, our Lord said woe to any one who seeks to put asunder------- meaning.; break or destroy what God has joined together. Marriage therefore is intensely spiritual ,much like our relationship with God and that's why Godalways compares His relationship to us as a marriage. Through out scripture from the prophets to the apostles ,and even our Lord gives a comparison between marriage and our relationship with Him.
Marriage is very dear to God's heart ,it should never be taken lightly.As the author of marriage,God has a lot to say about it throughout the bible.Genesis after creation began with story of marriage ,revelation ended with the story of another kind of marriage that of the resurrected Christ and His bride - the church.We can not escape it,every married person who wants to have a serious relationship with God must without fail work on their marriage. As it were for the married ,our marriage represents a picture of our personal relationship with God. That's why one of cardinal rule of marriage relationship is the phrase " do it as unto the Lord". Husbands love your wife as Christ loves the church ---------love your wife as unto the lord, wives submit to your own husband as unto the lord. Not only is God the thread that holds the marriage together ,couples are to see God in each other----Solomon with all failures in marriage was able to boldly declare in Ecclisiastics4vs 12" a cord of three strands is not quickly and easily broken".
The foundation of the church is the family with Godly marriage at it's center.In the 1st century every church began with a family that has been saved. The churches of that era also began in homes of the saved believes .The churches were not impersonal as they are today. As great as our mega churches are we have lost a vital component of the church, the integrity of the family.because we have imbibed the values of our culture that says marriage is a contract,and so like our churches marriages have become impersonal business contract that can be vitiated at any time.,since our churches are also run like business entities,instead of being first and foremost spiritual entities.
Except the integrity of marriage and the family is restored we might have a big problem in our hands that there will be no church for the next generation much like the situation in the old testament when the temple was destroyed.It took 70 years before another was built.Today the signs are all over Europe where cathedrals are empty,most of them are like museums,others have been bought over by wealthy merchants and turned into nite clubs and others into mosques. James says if you can not love the man that you see,how can you say you love God that you do not see. If we continue to take our marriage committements lightly,it will soon reflect on our commitment to God that we do not see.But God is faithful who will not leave us and He remains faithful and committed to us
Because every thing about us begins in the spirit,our warfare is also spiritual. Many of us today treat our marriage the way we treat every thing else,physical, natural ,culture oriented or simply biological.we also get married for the wrong reasons.But the bible says we are in a war daily,and our weapons are mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds. Believe it or not divorce is one of such strong holds that have taken a hold of the church,we can't seem to shake it off,our counseling rooms are swelling up but with no real solution in sight. Therefore the time has come for us to turn our eyes on the One who alone can give us victory.
In our text Paul was able to declare boldly,I have fought and so I have kept the faith.Is it possible that because we have not fought the good fight in our marriage that's why we have not been able to keep the faith in our marriage?it does not matter where you right now,rise up and fight the good fight,He will hear and He will give us victory.together we can rout the this strong hold in Jesus name amen.
